College Volleyball Official Visits: Complete Guide

18 min read

An official visit is the most important 48 hours of your recruiting process.

This is when you'll meet the coaching staff, stay with team members, attend classes, tour facilities, and get a real feel for what life would be like as a student-athlete at that school. And the school pays for everything.

Here's the catch: You only get 5 official visits total. That's it. For your entire recruiting process. So you need to be strategic about when you take them, which schools you visit, and what questions you ask.

This guide covers everything you need to know about official visits: NCAA rules, when to schedule them, what to expect, questions to ask, red flags to watch for, and how to make your final decision.

💡 Quick Summary:

  • You get 5 official visits total (for your entire recruiting career, across all Division I and II schools)
  • School pays for everything (transportation, lodging, meals for 48 hours)
  • Can only take official visits senior year (starting first day of classes senior year)
  • Must be on school's priority list (coaches can only host 12 official visits per year in volleyball)
  • Purpose: Get recruited AND evaluate fit (this is a two-way evaluation—you're also deciding if you want to commit)

What You'll Learn:

  • What Is an Official Visit? (vs Unofficial Visit)

1. What Is an Official Visit?

An official visit is a recruiting visit to a college campus where the school pays for your expenses—transportation, lodging, and meals for up to 48 hours.

⚠️ Key Point:

If a coach invites you on an official visit, it means they're seriously recruiting you. Schools can only host 12 official visits per year in volleyball, so they don't waste them on athletes they're not genuinely interested in. An official visit invitation = you're on their short list.

2. Official Visit Rules (NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA)

NCAA and NAIA have different rules for official visits depending on division level. Here's what you need to know:

NCAA Division I & II Official Visit Rules

  • Maximum 5 official visits total (across ALL Division I and Division II schools combined; you can't take 5 D1 visits + 5 D2 visits—it's 5 total)
  • Only 1 official visit per school (can't take multiple official visits to same school)
  • Can only take official visits senior year (starting the first day of classes of your senior year)
  • Up to 48 hours on campus (can arrive no earlier than day before official visit starts, must leave by Sunday evening if Friday-Saturday visit)
  • School can pay for: Round-trip transportation (plane, train, bus, mileage if driving), lodging, meals (3 per day max)
  • School CANNOT pay for: Entertainment beyond campus events (no concerts, pro sports games), gifts or souvenirs, family members' expenses (parents can come, but you pay their costs)
  • Must be academically eligible (registered with NCAA Eligibility Center, on track to meet core course + GPA requirements)

NCAA Division III Official Visit Rules

Division III does NOT allow official visits. All visits to D3 schools are unofficial visits, which means:

  • You pay for all expenses (transportation, lodging, meals)
  • No limit on number of unofficial visits
  • Can visit anytime (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior year)
  • D3 schools often arrange "hosted visits" (similar experience to official visit—stay with team, attend practice—but you still pay for travel/lodging)

Why this matters: When evaluating D3 schools, budget for multiple visits (you'll want to visit your top 3-5 D3 schools before committing, and you're paying for all of them). Plan unofficial visits strategically—combine multiple schools in one trip if possible to save money.
