After 24 years coaching at the university and national level, I've watched recruiting timelines shift earlier and earlier.
Here's what you need to know: If you wait until senior year, you're too late for most D1 programs.
But don't panic. This guide will show you exactly what to do at each grade level to maximize your scholarship opportunities.
The Reality of Volleyball Recruiting in 2026
When Coaches Actually Recruit:
Division I:
- Start watching sophomores (elite athletes only)
- Actively recruit juniors (80% of commits)
- Finish recruiting seniors (remaining roster spots)
Division II:
- Start watching juniors
- Actively recruit seniors
- Some rolling offers into college
Division III:
- Recruit juniors and seniors
- Rolling recruiting (less pressure on early commits)
NAIA:
- Similar to D2 (juniors and seniors)
- More flexible timeline
Junior College (JUCO):
- Recruit seniors and post-grads
- Year-round recruiting (always looking for talent)
Bottom line: The higher the division, the earlier you need to start.
Freshman Year: Build Your Foundation
Focus: Academics + Skills
- GPA goal: 3.5+ (4.0 if targeting elite D1 programs)
- Volleyball: Join a competitive club team
- Physical development: Strength training, vertical jump training
Action Items:
✅ Academics
- Take challenging classes (honors/AP if available)
- Build good study habits (recruiting is easier with a 3.7+ GPA)
- Meet with guidance counselor about NCAA Eligibility Center requirements
✅ Volleyball
- Join a club team (or try out for the highest level you can)
- Focus on fundamentals (passing, serving, positioning)
- Attend local camps/clinics
✅ Recruiting
- Create a Gmail account (firstname.lastname@gmail.com — you'll use this for recruiting)
- Start following college programs on social media
- Watch college matches (learn what level you want to play)
Emailing Coaches?
Not yet. Freshman year is too early for most programs.
Exception: Elite athletes with national team experience may get D1 interest. But even then, coaches can't officially contact you until June 15 after sophomore year.
Sophomore Year: Start Getting Noticed
Focus: Exposure + Video
- GPA goal: Maintain 3.5+
- Volleyball: Play varsity + competitive club level
- Recruiting: Start building video library
Action Items:
✅ Academics
- Take the PSAT (good practice for SAT/ACT)
- Continue challenging coursework
- Register with NCAA Eligibility Center (if targeting D1/D2)
✅ Volleyball
- Film every match (high school + club)
- Attend showcases (AAU Nationals, JVA, etc.)
- Get on a club team that travels to big tournaments
✅ Recruiting
- Create Hudl account (upload match footage)
- Start list of 50-100 schools you're interested in
- Follow those programs on Instagram/Twitter
Emailing Coaches?
D1 programs: Only if you're elite (All-American, national team, etc.)
D2/D3 programs: Not yet (too early)
NCAA rules: Coaches can't contact you until June 15 after sophomore year. But you can email them anytime.
Junior Year: MOST IMPORTANT YEAR
Focus: Active Recruiting
- This is when most D1 commits happen
- You should be emailing 30-50 coaches
- Attend ID camps at your top schools
Action Items:
✅ Academics (Critical)
- Take SAT/ACT (spring of junior year)
- Goal: 1200+ SAT or 24+ ACT (D1 eligibility)
- Higher scores = more scholarship money
✅ Volleyball
- Film EVERYTHING (every high school match, every club tournament)
- Update Hudl with recent matches (coaches want current footage)
- Attend showcases (AAU, JVA, USA Volleyball events)
✅ Recruiting (TIME TO EXECUTE)
- Fall (Sept-Nov): Email 30+ coaches with video + stats
- Winter (Dec-Feb): Attend ID camps at top 5 schools
- Spring (Apr-June): Follow up with interested coaches, narrow list to top 10 schools
- Summer (July-Aug): Official/unofficial visits, narrow to top 3 schools
Emailing Timeline (Junior Year):
September-October (Start Outreach)
- Research 50 schools (academic fit + volleyball level)
- Find coach emails (use Ryloa or Google)
- Send initial email to 30-40 coaches
- Template: "Hi Coach, I'm [Name], a 2027 [position], here's my video: [link]"
November-December (Follow Up)
- Track responses (spreadsheet: school, date sent, response, next step)
- Follow up with non-responders (2 weeks after initial email)
- Schedule phone calls with interested coaches
January-March (ID Camps)
- Attend camps at your top 5 schools
- Email coaches BEFORE camp: "I'll be at your ID camp on [date]"
- Email coaches AFTER camp: "Thanks for the camp, still very interested"
April-June (Decision Time)
- Narrow list to 10 schools
- Take official visits (D1 allows 5 official visits)
- Compare scholarship offers
- Decide if you want to commit OR wait until senior year
Reality check: 60-70% of D1 commits happen during junior year or summer after junior year. If you have a solid offer from a school you love, take it. Don't wait for a "better offer" that might not come.
Senior Year: Final Push (or Finish What You Started)
Two Scenarios:
Scenario A: You Already Committed (Junior Year)
Congratulations! But you're not done yet.
✅ Academics
- Maintain GPA (colleges can revoke offers if grades drop)
- Graduate on time (NCAA Eligibility Center tracks this)
- Take required core courses (check NCAA requirements)
✅ Volleyball
- Stay healthy (don't play hurt, you have a scholarship waiting)
- Keep training (don't show up to college out of shape)
- Help younger teammates with recruiting
✅ Recruiting
- Submit final transcripts to NCAA Eligibility Center
- Finalize scholarship paperwork (sign NLI in November)
- Stay in touch with college coaches
Scenario B: You're Still Recruiting (No Commitment Yet)
Don't panic. You still have options, but you need to act FAST.
Focus: D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO
Reality: Most D1 rosters are full by senior fall. You might get a late offer if a commit backs out, but don't count on it.
Better strategy: Target D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs. They recruit later and often have more roster flexibility.
Red Flags: Signs You're Behind
Freshman/Sophomore Year:
- ❌ No club team
- ❌ GPA below 3.0
- ❌ No video footage
Fix: Join a club, improve grades, start filming matches.
Junior Year (CRITICAL):
- ❌ Haven't emailed any coaches by October
- ❌ No Hudl account with recent video
- ❌ Haven't attended any showcases
- ❌ GPA below 3.0 or no SAT/ACT scores
Fix: Start emailing coaches THIS WEEK. Upload video to Hudl. Register for showcases. Take SAT/ACT in spring.
Reality check: If it's spring of junior year and you haven't done ANY recruiting activity, you're late but not out. You have 6 months to catch up.
Senior Year (Last Chance):
- ❌ No coach interest by September
- ❌ Still waiting for D1 offers
- ❌ Haven't looked at D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO options
Fix: Shift focus to D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO immediately. Email 50 coaches in the next 2 weeks. Attend fall showcases. Take official visits in October/November.
Hard truth: If it's December of senior year and you have zero offers, you're probably looking at JUCO or walking on somewhere.
NCAA Eligibility Timeline (D1 & D2 Only)
What You Need:
- ✅ Core Courses: 16 core courses (English, math, science, social studies)
- ✅ GPA: 2.3+ (sliding scale based on SAT/ACT)
- ✅ Test Scores: SAT/ACT required (check current NCAA minimums)
- ✅ Registration: NCAA Eligibility Center account
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| Sophomore Year | Register with NCAA Eligibility Center |
| Junior Year | Upload transcripts, take SAT/ACT |
| Senior Fall | Submit final test scores |
| Senior Spring | Submit final transcripts after graduation |
Important: D3, NAIA, and JUCO have different eligibility requirements. Check with each association.
Scholarships: What to Expect by Division
Division I
- Full rides: Rare (top 10-20 recruits per year)
- Partial scholarships: Common (50-80% tuition)
- Headcount: 12 full scholarships per team (can be split among more players)
Division II
- Partial scholarships: Most common (30-60% tuition)
- Headcount: 8 full scholarships per team (can be split)
Division III
- No athletic scholarships (academic/need-based aid only)
- Cost: Often comparable to D1/D2 after financial aid
NAIA
- Partial scholarships: Common (varies widely)
- Headcount: 8 full scholarships per team
JUCO
- Full rides: More common than D1 (coaches have more flexibility)
- Partial scholarships: Also common
Bottom line: Very few athletes get full rides. Most get 30-60% scholarships and cover the rest with academic aid, loans, or family contributions.
Frequently Asked Questions
"Is it too late if I'm a senior and haven't started recruiting?"
Not too late, but you need to act FAST.
Focus on:
- D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO (they recruit later)
- Email 50 coaches THIS WEEK
- Update video, attend fall showcases
- Be open to walking on somewhere
Reality: D1 rosters are mostly full. But D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO are still actively recruiting.
"Should I commit junior year or wait for better offers?"
Depends on the offer.
Commit if:
- You love the school (academically + athletically)
- Scholarship offer is solid (50%+)
- You're not sure you'll get better offers
Wait if:
- You're elite (confident better offers are coming)
- Current offer is low (20% or less)
- You haven't visited enough schools
Don't wait too long. Roster spots fill up. A 60% scholarship at your #2 school is better than no scholarship anywhere.
"Do I need to attend ID camps?"
Yes, if you're serious about that school.
ID camps show:
- You're willing to invest ($200-400 per camp)
- You want to meet the coaches in person
- You can compete at that level
Reality: Coaches recruit from their own camps first. If you're interested in a school, attend their camp.
